Pennies for Pakistan

For the most parts of this chapter 580 Letters, One check are wonderful paragraphs and has alot of important events on this chapter. However there is one event that stood out to me. When Greg's mother collected 62,345 pennies from the elementry school kids in Wisconsin which she was in charge. Greg says, "Children had taken the first step toward building the school. And they did with it something that is basically worthless in our society--pennies. But overseas, pennies can move mountains." (52.) I though this quotation is very emotional because kids in the US elementry school are helping their counterpart in the other side of the world with pennies that is just what they could. Secondly, a lot of people don't realize the importance of pennies plus pennies can make a huge impact on big communities.

  3. very true phil.... I think its interesting how this country (The United States) can appear to be so inspirational to the world, but today it seems that charity cases are commercialized and broadcasted through celebrities only. Im not arguing that no help is being done, but it appears that the only way for anyone to join together in a large organization to help requires P. Diddy's face on t.v. I find it frustrating that not a single governmental agency could even respond to Greg's plans for a mere $12,000, when any broadcasting cooperation would pay more than ten times that amount to have some celebrity ask us to "text" help to some organization.

Whats even more interesting is the fact that the United States gives out more money per capita to the world for aid than any other country in the world. This strikes me as rediculous. Greg couldnt even get $12,000 for a cause in a place that im sure most people havent even heard of.

I think its time to open our eyes as a country and the way our government funds financial aid into organizations. Maybe im just ranting here, but I think this world really needs to make some changes about helping others.
