The New Chapter
At the end of chapter five Mortenson is discussing about getting his funds ready to leave for Pakistan. He talks about different things he still needs to get done, and the promise he made to Marina, for when he comes back. After this trip, he wants things to be different. The morning before he leaves it says this, " The morning before his flight, Mortenson drove Marina to work, then made his most difficult divestment. At a used-car lot in Oakland, he back La Bamba into a space and sold it four five hundred dollars. The gas guzzler had carried him faithfully from the Midwest to his new existence as a climber in California. It had housed him for a year while he struggled to find his way through the funraising wilderness. Now, the proceeds from the car would help send him to the other side of the earth. He patted the big burgundy hood, pocketed the money, and carried his duffel bag toward the taxi waiting to take him to the next chapter of his life." This says a lot about how serious he really is by selling his car for money to help fund a school on the other side of the earth. And, I really liked when he says the taxi is going to take him to the next chapter in his life, because thats what it seems like it is. With him things keep changing on what he wants to do.

I agree with you he is serious about the project and trying keep up with promise he had made to the people in Pakistan.
ReplyDeleteI almost chose this quote to write about too. I think it's really cool that he sold his car for a couple hundred bucks, to build a school for children he barely knows. It says a lot about his character too, like how self-sacrificing he is for the benefit of others.
