On The Edge

Greg Mortenson the main character in Three Cups of Tea is a man not afraid to take a risk and is in full control of the life that he lives. Mortenson decided that he was going to build a school for the children of a village near k2 where he has just recently failed to summit. When Mortenson retured and had gathered all of the material necessary to buld the school they headed out in a Bedford truck. The writer presents the reader a sense of danger describing what the road condtions were like in that particular part of the world. The author david relin writes, "The bedford was climbing a steep hill, and slipped backward near it crestm as Mohammed fumbled with the shidt, manhandling it until in clanked into fist gear. Mortenson, leaninf out over the passenfer side of the can, could see the truck;s rear tires rolling a foot from the edge of the gorge, spitting stones out into the abyss as Mohammmed gunned the engine. Whenever the tires strayed too near to the edge, the assistant whistled sharply and the truck swung left." Just as Mortenson and his team proceeded up the narrow road risking falling to their deaths, we too walk a narrow road in our own lives. Every move we make has an effect on our lives, and who we become. This may not be the orginal reason for including this into the novel but I feel like it relates and is a lesson that we could get from the book. We can not sit around and waste our lives. We must walk the narrow path and take chances in order to reach our goals jsut as Mortenson is traveling toward of building his school.

  1. I like that Mortenson did not even stop to think about the risks. He jumped right in with both feet. I agree we have to take risks, and I also think you sometimes have to jump in before the risks scare you away.
