Ode to the Fallen by Melissa Allen

I stand above a fallen soldier
Waving in the wind.
My colors represent
All that is and all that have been.

His name is etched in stone
That is erected to my right.
Like I, the stone is worn
But that didn't stop the fight.

He did not die in vain
As his death saved three
His wife and son won't forget
As they pray on their knees.

With each drop of blood
Spilled in my name
I become more united,
Fueling the flame.

I stand tall and proud
Like this soldier once stood.
He did many things
That no one else would.

Through the dry desert heat
And the wind and rain
He crawled through the mud,
Leading the campaign.

He was a genuine hero,
Though some would not agree.
He gave up his life
So we could be free.

I just love this! It means a lot to a soldier to see words like this!
