Defender of the Free

Defender of the Free

With his right hand raised
He swears to defend
The loving home he leaves behind
For a far distant land.

It is neither for recognition
Nor a better life.
Because he may not see tomorrow,
His life could end tonight.

He stands on watch protecting his friends
Like a mother for her kids,
Never once regretting
The promise he made to defend.

Each day passes like a year
And he wishes he were home.
Without his friends and family,
He feels all alone.

The skies were blue
The sun shone bright, like a torch that fateful day.
He gave himself to protect his friends
By jumping on a grenade.

Soldiers line up at the rear of the plane
The bagpipes begin to play,
All saluting and not a dry eye
They all begin to pray.

He will not be forgotten
For the sacrifice he made
Because of him others will live
In the land of the free and the home of the brave.

  3. Zach, this was a great poem! So touching and deep. It really puts evrything into perspective and makes you appreciate all that you have. It makes you realize how scary it must be to be in that position being deployed. I would not be aable to willingly do something like that. I respect all those who do! I can't imagine.
